STEMM Panel: Leaning In and Managing Pushback

This panel features a panel of women leaders in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine). The goals of this panel discussion are to showcase successful women leaders in STEMM, hear about their career trajectories including the choices they have made and the challenges they have encountered, and any tips they might share for how to succeed.  Another goal is to address in practical terms the real-world problem many women in STEMM face when they “lean in” only to find that their actions are often met with increased and heavy resistance.

leinen_cliff_smallDr. Margaret Leinen, a highly distinguished national leader and oceanographer, was appointed the eleventh director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego in July 2013. She also serves as UC San Diego’s vice chancellor for marine sciences and dean of the School of Marine Sciences. She joined UC San Diego in October 2013.

Dr.Leinen is an award-winning oceanographer and an accomplished executive with extensive national and international experience in ocean science, global climate and environmental issues, federal research administration, and non-profit startups. She is a researcher in paleo-oceanography and paleo-climatology. Her work focuses on ocean sediments and their relationship to global biogeochemical cycles and the history of Earth’s ocean and climate.

KitProfessor Kit Pogliano (PhD Harvard University) joined the UCSD faculty in 1996, and is currently Professor in the Section of Molecular Biology and Chair of the UCSD Academic Senate. She was previously Chair of the Academic Senate Committee on Diversity and Equity, the Committee on Committees and the Biological Sciences Education Committee. She serves on a variety of national and international scientific advisory groups, including the National Institute of Health, the American Society for Microbiology and the Max Planck Society. Her research is focused on understanding how bacterial cells are organized during growth, development and antibiotic treatment. She has developed cell biological tools to rapidly identify antibacterial molecules and characterize their likely cellular targets. Professor Pogliano is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and was a Searle Scholar, a Beckman Young Investigator and a Damon Runyon Postdoctoral Scholar. She is cofounder of Linnaeus Bioscience (La Jolla, CA), a company that develops cell biological methods for drug discovery.

marcus-bessFor more than 25 years, Dr. Bess Marcus has directed research aimed at promoting exercise adherence and understanding the acquisition and maintenance of exercise behavior, and has published more than 200 articles on this topic. Dr. Marcus developed and validated assessments for understanding the stages and processes of exercise behavior change, and has also developed interventions to promote moderate-intensity physical activity in community, workplace, and primary care settings. She has participated in the American Heart Association, American College of Sports Medicine, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and National Institutes of Health panels which have created the recommendations on the quantity and intensity of physical activity necessary for health benefits.
